Latest News

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is my great pleasure to announce that our next webinar addresses Representing DV Survivors experiencing Trauma and Other Mental Health Challenges.  We will feature a handbook written for lawyers about imagethe trauma and emotional stress caused by domestic violence.  Many attorneys are perplexed about strategies for representing mental health-involved clients.  Responses to domestic violence by clients experiencing trauma may appear inconsistent with what judges typically have seen in DV victims (e.g., trauma-involved clients may be more passive, more risk-taking or more defiant and physically resistant to batterers). Judicial bias may compromise a court’s assessment of your client’s credibility and foster conclusions that are adverse to domestic violence survivors who are distressed or struggling with mental health challenges. Representation of clients who struggling with trauma and stress may best be served using different interviewing techniques and novel trial strategies.

Our faculty are the authors of the Handbook, Olga Trujillo, formerly of the Office on Victims of Crime and the Office on Violence Against Women in the US Department of Justice, Erika Sussman, Executive director of CSAJ, Center for Survivor Agency and Justice, and Mary Seighman with the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma & Mental Health and the Alliance of Local Service Organizations.

Please pass the word about this webinar to attorneys - prosecutors, defense bar, judges, civil attorneys - and social workers and victim advocates working in the justice system.

Look forward to conversing with you on-line on May 30 and June 13.

Best Regards,

Ethics of Practice

photoRepresenting victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, sex trafficking, elder abuse, and teen dating violence in civil, criminal and administrative proceedings requires heightened ethical  diligence by lawyers.

Similarly, prosecuting perpetrators of violence against women requires careful attention to ethical standards of practice.
